Background

The American Institute for Roman Culture and the Archaeological Superintendency for Lazio announce a new excavation to start in July, 2004 at Borgorose. The site, known as Frontale di Torano, is about 45 miles from Rome in a mountain valley not far from LÕAquila, Subiaco, and Avezzano. There are extensive remains on the site, which may have been a Roman rural sanctuary or villa. The site is expected to be rich in finds since it has never been excavated.

Staff

Scientific Director is Prof. Bernard Frischer; Field Director is Dr. Monica De Simone; and Dr. Dario Rose is the Administrative Director and Associate Scientific Director.

Volunteers

A field school will be run on the site in 2004. Up to twenty volunteers can be accommodated in each of the two sessions, which both run for two weeks (July 4-18; July 18-August 1, 2004). If you volunteer, you will work five and one-half days a week on the site, where you will also receive lessons in archaeological theory and practice(use of tools; keeping proper written, graphic, and photographic records; cleaning and cataloguing artifacts; use of surveying equipment such as a total station; etc.). Volunteers may attend both sessions.

Saturday afternoon and Sunday are free periods. You will have the opportunity to take excursions to nearby archaeological sites and, on the last Saturday, to Rome. Volunteers will be given ground transportation from Rome to the site and back; and from their lodging to the site each workday.

Room, Board, Contribution

Meals will be provided Monday through Saturday. There are two types of housing available: in a 3-star hotel with a swimming pool; and in a mountain resort. Each volunteer (or a parent or other relative) is asked to make a tax-deductible contribution. If you stay in the hotel, the contribution is US $1,925; in the mountain resort, it is US $1,475. There is a 10% discount for volunteers who participate in both sessions.

Certificate

Volunteers who successfully complete the field school will be given a certificate of participation.
